Mind and body in perfect balance

Tai chi master Chen Zhonghua is completely balanced on one leg, the river and city behind him providing the perfect backdrop.

It is a display of the sort of movement and poise that has made him the world's finest exponent of his art.

Master Chen is the international standard-bearer of the Chen-style tai chi practical method. He said tai chi was created as a martial art, but had evolved over time.

"In modern times people realised that martial artists who did tai chi lived longer," he said.

For many tai chi exponents it was now primarily focused on a way to keep both mind and body healthy in an injury-free environment, he said.

His classes were a combination of teachings including the choreography, the physics behind it, the original meaning of each move, the energy alignment and the martial aspect.

Master Chen is visiting Perth for workshops this weekend, hosted by the Ging Mo Academy.

Academy principal and master Gawain Siu said having master Chen in Perth was an honour and an excellent chance for local enthusiasts to learn.
