Joe Snell's renovating tips

Joe Snell. Picture: Nicholas Wilson

The House Rules teams had just 24 hours to go back and transform their least-favourite rooms. Here, judge and architect Joe Snell shares his tips on how to make over your space in a single day.

PAINT

It's relatively cheap and easy to change. In most homes a crisp white is the default refresh, but there are many things to consider.

Think about going lighter to make the space bigger. Think about going darker to make the space cosier. Think about horizontal lines to extend the space. Think about vertical lines to heighten the space.

Think about colour - all the walls or just one wall - (and) if you are unsure try one wall and go from there.

RE-ARRANGE

A fun exercise is to completely remove everything in a room - and I mean everything.

You will be surprised what the room looks like - you will get a new appreciation for it! Then slowly, considerately move things back in.

The picture will slowly build and you will see that you don't need all that you had before.

MIRROR

One of my secret weapons has always been the clever use of mirror - it is relatively cheap and can be magical.

Use large pieces on a wall and bring the view in or make the space appear larger.

Break it up and make spots of energy to liven up a space. I have even used it on the ceiling!
