An arts graduate who speaks several languages and hopes to carve out a career in international diplomacy is WA's newest Rhodes Scholar.

Amy Steinepreis, 23, said she was "astonished" to learn she had won the prestigious scholarship to Oxford University.

"It's indescribable," she said.

"I was just so grateful for this opportunity.

"I think Oxford was really important for me because it has such outstanding language facilities."

She plans to complete masters degree studies in modern languages and international relations.

Ms Steinepreis completed a Bachelor of Arts with first class honours in English, French and Italian at the University of WA, followed by a masters degree in international journalism.

She is fluent in French and Italian and has a working grasp of Russian, Spanish and Latin.

Ms Steinepreis said she hoped to work for a global organisation such as UNESCO or the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

The dux of St Mary's Anglican Girls' School in 2008, she is also a talented tennis player and cyclist who has taken part in the Ride to Conquer Cancer for the past three years.
