Four people are in custody after a police chase lead officers from Mt Pleasant to St Georges Terrace in the CBD causing traffic chaos for commuters.

Police started the pursuit on Bateman Road and Gunbower Road in Mt Pleasant just after 5pm after noticing the allegedly stolen vehicle.

About 40 minutes later the 12km pursuit ended on St Georges Terrace between Mill and Milligan Streets.

Two westbound lanes on St Georges Terrace had to be closed due to the incident. Motorists are being asked to avoid the area.

It is understood the allegedly stolen vehicle and a police car were involved in a minor crash resulting in injuries to the driver and a police officer.

All four occupants are being questioned with several charges expected to be laid.
