With an upcoming solo season in New York, a fan in the form of legendary comic Joan Rivers and a budding new romance, Perth-raised comedian Joel Creasey is well on his way to living out what he calls his "American dream".

Already an established performer in his home country, the rising star only made his international debut at the New York Comedy Festival last year but was quickly invited to open for Rivers and is set to return to the Big Apple for more shows in the coming months.

And now, AAA Weekend can reveal Creasey has also embarked on a new relationship with Los Angeles-based actor Jeffery Self, who has appeared in 30 Rock and Desperate Housewives.

"It was very unexpected because I had gone through a pretty crappy breakup last year and wasn't planning on looking at anyone else but it just all sort of snowballed overnight and now I am in a relationship," Creasey explained.

"He is going to be in New York when I am there and then I am heading back to LA to be with him for a bit. He was also (in Australia) recently for the Melbourne Comedy Festival."

Having a partner who is also in the world of showbiz has been a blessing for Creasey, whose profile is only set to rise with a string of international gigs planned and a TV talk show pilot in the works.

Still based in Melbourne for the time being, the 23-year-old admitted the long-distance nature of his relationship with Self was tough but they were working through the challenge.

"It's quite awful but we've got Facetime and we are both pretty career-focused," Creasey said. "Because you are on the other side of the world it's just fascinating."
