Primero sees green gas shoots

Primero Group managing director Cameron Henry says the successful delivery of a maiden project for Chevron's $US29 billion ($37.6 billion) Wheatstone LNG contract will be the start of more work with blue-chip clients.

Speaking after yesterday celebrating the commissioning in Bibra Lake of the domestic gas meter station, built by Primero, Mr Henry said he also saw reason to be optimistic about the future for his and fellow WA contractors despite margin pressure.

"There are definitely some green shoots out there," he said.

"There is increased competition and you have to fight hard for the work. The shoe is definitely on the client's foot but I am positive about the future. If you're a smart, small and nimble contractor, there is work to be done.

"We have some of the biggest assets in the world (such as Wheatstone and Gorgon) and they are still developing and there's going to be a lot of work on keeping them running."

The gas meter station, which contributed about $2.5 million to Primero's $50 million order book, was the company's first job for Chevron and Mr Henry said he hoped it would lead to more work on Wheatstone, and lead to work for other tier-one clients.
