Six of the best for Sheidel

Six of the best for Sheidel

Electrifying filly Sheidel capped a memorable campaign with a sixth straight win in today’s Classic Meats Handicap at Ascot.

The 1000m dash delivered on its promise of a showdown between quality three-year-olds Sheidel and Rebel King.

Jumping from the outside gate, Sheidel ($2.20 to $1.90 favourite) showcased her brilliant early speed to jump straight to the front.

However, she didn’t get it her own way in front, with stablemate Benito applying pressure on her outside.

Jockey Patrick Carbery released the breaks on Sheidel early in the straight and she shot clear, establishing what would be a race-winning lead.

Rebel King, the $3.70 second favourite, was fourth on the turn but got blocked for clear running until the 150m.

He sprinted powerfully once in the clear but it was all too late, with Sheidel scoring by ¾ of a length.

Dueton ($18) ran third and Rock Magic, lumping the 60.5kg topweight, was brave in defeat when fourth.

Sheidel set a new Westspeed bonus record with today’s victory, eclipsing The Rising’s benchmark of $165,000.

“She’s pretty special isn’t she,” trainer David Harrison said.

“She flew the gates but they made her work all the way.

“The second horse got out a bit late and it was probably unlucky.

“But we probably should’ve beaten him the first time we met him so the score’s equal now.

“I actually thought Benito might lead her. That’s the quickest she’s jumped.”

Sheidel, a winner at eight of 10 starts, will be spelled. Harrison said she will be aimed at Ascot summer carnival features.

“I suppose you’ve got to look at the Jungle Mist and Colonel Reeves over the carnival,” Harrison said.

“She couldn’t have done any more than she has done and she’s improving every start.”

Meanwhile, gun WA mare Magnifisio ran fourth to Daytona Grey first-up in today’s RN Irwin Stakes (1100m) at Morphettville.

The Group 1 Winterbottom Stakes (1200m) winner settled perfectly in fourth position but laboured on the soft track.

She will derive benefit from the run heading to her main aim, the Group 1 Robert Sangster Classic (1200m) at the same track in a fortnight.
