Samsung takes it to Apple with S6

Samsung's Galaxy S6 will be released on April 10

In its latest attempt to turn around its declining market share of its mobile phone business, Samsung today revealed the pricing and specifications of the latest incarnation of its flagship phone, the Galaxy S6.

The South Korean phone maker will release the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge - a phone with a wraparound screen on the phone's edges - to Australian stores on April 10, with the edge starting at $1149.

The 128GB model will set you back $1449.

The 32GB standard S6 starts at $999 with the 128GB version bumping up to $1299.

Features include a 16-megapixel rear-facing camera - complete with optical image stabilisation - and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera.

The phone maker also claims the thin (6.8mm/7mm edge) and lightweight (138g /132g edge) is "setting a new standard for Samsung in universal wireless charging", and has an extended battery life.

The wireless charging is activated by placing the device on a separately-sole compatible charging stand.

Though it is still the number one phone maker in the world, Samsung's market share of the mobile phone business has been slowly eroded by Apple, particularly following last year's release of the iPhone 6 and 6plus.

Analysts have already compared the devise to the iPhone 6 - some saying it has a better design - with Samsung taking a greater focus on the high-fashion stakes.

In other tech news, ASUS today announced that ASUS ZenWatch, its first wearable device powered by Android Wear and produced in partnership with Google, will be available for $289 from April.
