Harvey boy Sheldon Hunwick was an inspiration to his fellow students and teachers at Harvey Primary School when he took it upon himself to raise money for those affected by Cyclone Olwyn that swept through Carnarvon earlier this month.

When Year 6 teacher Shae Jovanovic spoke to the class about the cyclone and the damage it had caused to families in the Carnarvon community, Sheldon, 11, was saddened and wanted to do something to help.

"I felt sorry for the people affected by the cyclone and started my own fundraiser," he said.

"I decided to raise money by doing jobs for people which included lawn mowing, weeding and other household chores.

"Many people had the same feelings as I did and donated money to support my cause.

"I've never been in the situation of a cyclone or any natural disaster before and it must be heartbreaking and devastating for the community to deal with.

"I raised $80 in total and I have given it to the Carnarvon State Emergency Service unit to help with clean-up and supplies for families affected," he said.

Teacher Shae Jovanovic said she was proud of Sheldon and his efforts.

"He is an inspiration and a role model to his peers and we congratulate him for taking the initiative to help others," she said.

"We are always encouraging our students to help others in the community and Sheldon's efforts have been an outstanding example of this."
