Guides set example with litter clean up
Baldivis Girl Guides will do their bit for the environment on Thursday and pick up litter at a local park as part of Clean Up Australia Day.
Guides leader Renee Stennett said more than 30 girls would spend the afternoon picking up litter at Steel Tree Park in the suburb, earning them a new badge for their Girl Guide sashes.
Mrs Stennett said the organisation encouraged girls to be socially responsible and to take part in different activities.
She said the Baldivis troupe was passionate about community service, in keeping with the Girl Guide promises to make choices for a better world and to use time and abilities wisely.
"We are very passionate about community service and something like this gives the girls an opportunity to explore," she said.
Clean Up Australia Day chairman Ian Kiernan said drinks container waste represented 24 per cent of litter collected in WA in 2014.
He said non-alcoholic bottles and cans collected last year had increased by 2 per cent, while discarded cigarette butts were up by 6 per cent on 2013.
"I urge the people of Rockingham to put themselves in the picture in 2015 and clean up your streets, parks, bushland and waterways on Sunday, March 1," he said.
More than 30 formal clean- up sites have been registered in Rockingham for Clean Up Australia Day, including Singleton Beach at 9am, Memorial Drive, Point Peron at 8.30am, Warnbro Beach at 10am and The Salvation Army, Rockingham at 10am.
