Factory fire in Welshpool

More than 30 firefighters helped contain a blaze that caused $1.5 million of damage at a Welshpool factory early this morning.

The fire began in rubbish bins at the back of the Klinger factory on McDowell Street at about 4.20am before spreading to a shed.

The blaze was contained to the shed, which contained raw materials for the manufacture of rings and gaskets for the gas and mining industry.

The company’s other building housing their production, manufacturing and sales capabilities were not affected.

Firefighters from Welshpool, Cockburn, Perth and Murdoch attended the blaze and traffic was blocked off between Orrong and Sheffield Roads.

Pollution monitoring teams from the Department of Environment Regulation were at the scene.

Department of Fire and Emergency Services field liaison office Ken Hall said no smoke alert was issued.

"The pollution levels were never at a level were it could be a danger to anyone," he said.

"The smoke never thick enough to cause visibility problems."

A Klinger spokesman said the company was able to draw on raw material stock from other locations in Australia and in Europe and Asia and there would be no delays to customers.

The company was open for business at 10.30am.

“There will be no negative effects to our customers, the fire isolated to that shed,” he said.
