Expo put pets in the spotlight

Snakes, dancing dogs and performing cats will take over the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre at WA's first pets expo on December 6 and 7.

Organiser Barbara McNaught said the two-day event was a must-see for all animal lovers.

She said the idea was inspired by the increasing awareness of the benefits pets could have on their owners' wellbeing and mental health - and with almost two-thirds of Australians owning a pet, the event was overdue.

It was also aimed at raising awareness about responsible pet ownership.

"Everybody loves pets," Ms McNaught said.

"Pets help you to be happy but we have to know how to treat the pets and we know it's not just a toy you buy and throw away. That's the message.

"The other fact is that 65 per cent of the population own pets and the other 35 are thinking about it. I wouldn't know any other thing that covers absolutely all ages and backgrounds."

Expo ambassador is animal behaviour expert Kate Lindsey, known as the "dog whisperer".

Dr Lindsey said the expo would celebrate the increasing role pets played in our lives. "Relationships have evolved and now more than ever companion animals are becoming a fully fledged family member," she said.
