Kal Cup trophy nearly a late scratching

The Kalgoorlie Cup has proven, for many, to be an elusive WA sporting icon. But this week, the trophy itself has been harder to find than actually winning the race.

The uniquely bowl-shaped cup and its replicas for the winning trainer and jockey, worth a combined $6835, were carefully crafted by a Sydney trophy-maker and dispatched on Monday to the Goldfields by Australia Post.

But when Kalgoorlie-Boulder Racing Club chief executive Tim Beaver checked the replica trophy boxes that lobbed earlier this morning, they were empty – a feeling replicated in his emotions given that the State’s richest country cup is being run tomorrow.

Mr Beaver said he had been told that the main cup, in its box, and the actual replica trophies had been sent through registered mail, while the two boxes had been sent via express post. It had initially been likely that the cups would not arrive until a way-too-late Monday morning.

Even past cup winners were being contacted in the hope they could provide temporary trophy relief for tomorrow’s presentation ceremony.

It also left a frantic search this morning through Australia Post offices in both Perth and Kalgoorlie, which finally extracted the gold a palpably relieved Mr Beaver had been craving.

The cups had indeed made it to the Perth offices and are expected to be flown to Kalgoorlie tonight.
