Byrne will play Alice, a young woman who gets engaged to a suitor from an uptight family - a far cry from her own eccentric clan.

She'll share the stage with Oscar- nominated actor James Earl Jones, who was in Perth last year for a production of Driving Miss Daisy.

The 34-year-old actress has crafted a solid resume in the US, showing off her dramatic chops in television series Damages before taking on comedy roles in Bridesmaids and Bad Neighbours.

You Can't Take It With You is expected to start previews in August.
