The RAC is looking to local people to nominate the State's most dangerous roads and intersections in a repeat of a 2011 campaign that led to dramatic improvements to WA's road network.

The Risky Roads campaign - dubbed WA's biggest road infrastructure community survey - received more than 6000 nominations in 2011.

Since then, the State Government has committed, started or completed work on nine of the top 10 nominated roads.

RAC general manager (corporate affairs) Will Golsby said the 2014 survey provided a timely opportunity for WA drivers to highlight their road concerns before the May State Budget.

"There is more than 187,000km of road in WA and no one knows it better than the people who drive, ride, cycle or walk on it every day," he said.

"This survey empowers community members to voice their concerns about dangerous roads and intersections so we can work together with relevant authorities to get them fixed and ultimately save lives."

A "risky road" is considered to be one that poses a danger to any user, including pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists.

It could include roads with poor alignment, limited visibility, a lack of appropriate signage or unsafe surfaces.

On busy city roads, it could include poorly designed intersections, inadequate traffic signals or confusing signs and markings.

And country roads could be too narrow and lack overtaking lanes.

Mr Golsby said the number of road fatalities in WA was still higher than the national average.

"In 2013, 162 Western Australians lost their lives on our roads," he said.

"That means on average, WA recorded one road death nearly every two days. Now is not the time to be complacent."

The survey is open to all West Australians and can be accessed at www.riskyroads.com.au .

As part of the campaign, there is an option for nominations, which close on May 22, to be sent to the local member of Parliament.
