Shock over state of $700pw Sydney rental: 'How is this allowed?'

Photo shared online shocked hopeful tenants.

A Sydney rental with an asking price of $700 a week has shocked hopeful tenants because of its filthy state, with some unable to believe it's been listed to begin with.

Photos of the property near Penrith in Western Sydney were shared on Facebook on Thursday. "Is this even allowed," the poster questioned.

The property was viewed in person by a friend of the poster who said it was supposedly "ready to move in". But photos show broken drawers, dirty walls and floors and a messy shed filled with belongings.

"Just went and had a look at the house that is ready to be moved into. This is what I came across," the poster's friend said. "There was also a room converted into a hair salon with clippers and hair everywhere," they claimed.

Rental property slammed: 'Beyond a joke'

The potential tenant claimed they were told the "property is as is" and if they didn't want what was left they could "dispose of it ourselves". They argued it was "not worth" the $700 asking price, and other commentators agreed.

"So basically they want you to clean the property they are meant to have reasonably clean and free from mould before renting it out. They also want you to dispose of all the junk/sh*t that someone has left behind or leave it there and then you can't use the space," one person wrote in the comments.

"And for that, you get to pay $700 pw. Pass," they added.

"Beyond a joke. Just shows total disrespect for rental tenants," another fumed. "That's disgusting," another said. Others questioned the legality of renting out a property in such a state.

But noting the state of the current rental crisis with limited properties available, others argued "sadly someone will accept it'.

Frustrated Aussie renters

Aussies are growing increasingly tired of subpar rental properties that are being flogged for extortionate prices. One woman on TikTok has become known for her rental property rants, calling landlords "greedy" and accusing them of exploiting the property crisis.

Recently, Rach McQueen took aim at a backyard caravan being listed for $650 a week in Queensland. But the chosen tenant would be required to move it to their own land. In a previous video showing a "shanti town" rental in Mullumbimby, New South Wales, the opinionated social media user said landlords are "profiteering" off people who can not afford housing with many agreeing rental pricing is getting "ridiculous".
