When the 43-year-old father saw a woman being assaulted at a service station he decided to stop and intervene.

However the men then turned on him and started stomping and kicking the Good Samaritan.

Mr McFarlane was driving with his son when he saw the men harassing the woman and stopped to help her.

Upon hearing the verdict on Friday the victim stormed out of court claiming he was “just trying to do the right thing and help a woman he thought was in need”.

One of the attackers had reportedly been pushing the woman before McFarlane stepped in to assist, leading to the brutal attack that lasted more than six minutes.

When the two attackers, Jake Broom and Sam Errett, faced court their lawyer told media outlets they were remorseful and had cooperated with police.

Erratt’s lawyer, Colin Greatorix, told the court Mr McFarlane had been practising jujitsu for a number of years and had threatened the two men.

“The assault has spilled over and now become something that was out of control and my client is extremely sorry for what has happened in that regard. Given his time again, this would not have happened.’’

Mr McFarlane's distressed family have decided to move away from Helensvale, where the incident occurred out of fear he will be targeted yet again.

Broom and Erratt both were fined $1000 each.
