'I still love my partner': Mother of boy, 5, stabbed to death blames health system

The mother of a five-year-old Sydney boy, allegedly murdered by his mentally ill father, has blamed the health system for the tragedy, saying she still loves the accused.

The 36-year-old man is accused of stabbing his son at their Carlingford home on Friday morning.

The grieving mum told the Daily Telegraph she had been begging hospital authorities to help her partner for years but said he had been ignored and was even turned away from hospital after a shortage of beds last week.

“My partner was a sick man. I work in a hospital and know only too well how poorly funded mental health is. The death of my son is the price I’m having to pay for this,” she said.

“I still love my partner. He’s a sick man, he’s not himself right now, it’s the drugs. We’ve been together for years.

“I need to be there to support him when no one has.”

The boy, who was described by neighbours as a “sweet, intelligent and friendly child”, died about an hour after arriving at Westmead Children’s Hospital.

His father has been remanded in custody and will face court again next month.
