A whopping $1.5 million discovery has been made stuffed inside an Aussie driver’s car after he was stopped by police on a major regional road. The 33-year-old Queensland man was behind the wheel of a Silver Kia Carnival van when he was pulled over on the Newell Highway near Dubbo in NSW just before 10am on Monday.

It was then officers “developed reasonable suspicion to search the vehicle”, the NSW Police Force’s Traffic and Highway Patrol Command said. Inside they located 78 kilograms of “cannabis bud” with a potential street value of $1.5 million.

Photos show the driver, who was arrested and taken to Dubbo Police Station, standing near the vehicle while wearing handcuffs, and dozens of vacuum sealed bags filled with marijuana stacked on top of each other.

The 33-year-old man is charged with supplying a prohibited drug in a commercial quality and possession of a prohibited drug. He was bail refused and will appear at Dubbo Local Court today.

“Illegal cannabis supply helps fund the activities of organised crime networks,” the NSW Police Force’s Traffic and Highway Patrol Command said when sharing the bust.

Aussies have joked online that it isn’t hard to figure out why police felt the need to search the man’s Kia. “Wow I can only imagine the smell in that car,” one person laughed. “You would of smelt it driving behind him,” another joked.

Cannabis is the most widely used illicit drug in the country, with 11 per cent of all Aussies admitting to getting high in the past year, according to a report published by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare in April.

It accounted for more than half of all national illicit drug seizures in 2020-21.
