Serious sex offender could be allowed back on the streets

A serious sex offender is about to be put back on the streets, despite fierce objections.

Former New South Wales government minister Milton Orkopoulos, who drugged teenage boys to have sex with them, could walk free at any time, after winning the right to parole.

The former Labor minister is serving 14 years in Long Bay jail and theoretically shouldn’t be released until 2021.

However, the 61-year-old could be back in the community any time, on day release.

“What he did to those young people was horrendous and inexcusable, the people of New South Wales have an expectation he’ll serve his sentence out in full,” Opposition Leader Michael Daley said.

The man’s victim has been sent a letter advising that Orkopoulos’s “classification has been reduced” and that “he is now eligible for pre-release leave.”

NSW Corrections Minister David Elliott says he will write to the prisons boss demanding strict conditions if Orkopoulos is given leave against his wishes.

It comes as questions were asked in parliament after it was revealed that a man who allegedly attacked a young girl in Sydney was on parole.

“This particular offender, whilst repugnant and disgusting, was actually given his parole under Labor’s regulations,” Mr Elliott said.

Police Commissioner Mick Fuller said the officer who allowed bail is taking it hard.

The alleged attacker, who is still in Prince of Wales Hospital, could face fresh charges when he’s released.
