Secret Harbour wins shield

Stand-out performances in the WA Surf Life Saving Senior State Championship competitions throughout the season led Secret Harbour SLSC to win the Handicap Club Shield.

The points were tallied from outstanding efforts at surfboard riding, pool rescue and this weekend's championships.

After the accumulated points had been calculated, Secret Harbour SLSC were awarded the shield out of 17 WA clubs which competed during the season.

Club spokeswoman Carolyn Wilson said club members were ecstatic when the cup was announced at the completion of the Senior State Championships at Scarborough Beach.

Mrs Wilson said Secret Harbour gained 187 points and moved up into ninth place overall.

"Congratulations to all the competitors," she said.

"The challenging surf conditions on both days saw some interesting racing and some upsets."

She said the club was represented by 25 members, including three boat crews, with many club competitors making the finals in gruelling conditions.

The under-23s male boat crew placed fourth in the final, Liam Bates came fifth in the under-15 male rescue tube race, and Mana Runnion was fourth in the under-17 2km female beach run.

The under-15 male surf team of Ewan Fletcher, Sam McGovern, Christopher Collins and Liam Bates finished sixth, with Collins also finishing eighth in the under-15 male beach flags event.

In the under-21 female single surf ski race, Alannah Wilson placed sixth.

Secret Harbour SLSC also had 27 junior members - under-11s to under-14s - competing at the Junior State Championships at Scarborough Beach the previous weekend. Secret Harbour finished eighth overall with 88 points.

The next challenge is the National Surf Life Saving Championships next month at North Kirra on the Gold Coast, Queensland.
