Scratchie card mistake that almost cost Aussie woman $50k

The woman said she was 'very, very close' to throwing away the huge sum.

An Aussie woman was dangerously close to making a $50,000 mistake after assuming her $4 scratchie card was a dud.

The Gold Coast local said her heart skipped a beat when she realised the Instant Scratch-Its ticket was in fact a winner, bagging her the massive windfall.

“I had scratched the ticket, and I did a final look to see if I had won anything,” she recalled. “I didn’t think I had won anything on it because initially, I thought the numbers didn’t match up. I was very, very close to throwing it out!"

When she did a double take, the woman says she went “into shock”. “The ticket stayed in a safe space until I claimed it at The Lott head office,” she said. “It’s so surreal.” She added she is “so glad” she didn’t throw away the winnings.

When asked how she’ll spend her windfall, she said she was too overcome with emotion to make concrete plans.

“Honestly, I’m still shocked by the news, so I haven’t had a great think,” she said. “I think I’ll let it stay in the bank until I’ve decided what to do.”

Mudgeeraba Newsagency sold the winning ticket.

“That’s awesome news!” said supervisor Tina Fullerton of the win. “We’re so happy to have sold a top prize-winning Instant Scratch-Its ticket worth $50,000.

In the last financial year, there have been 147 Instant Scratch-Its top prize winners who collectively took home more than $12.1 million in top prizes.
