Decapitated teddies and sinister note shock town

A small South Australian town is in disbelief after vandals decapitated a set of children’s teddy bears before leaving a sinister note warning of a “big surprise”.

The bears, used as an advertising campaign for a local mechanic, were first spotted 18 months ago and quickly became a local icon for residents in the Barossa Valley town of Kapunda.

On Tuesday evening the owner of Kapunda Mechanical Repairs, Alex Boes, set the seven teddies up on Main Street as part of a circus display – but what happened overnight left community members deeply disturbed.

The bears were found with their heads ripped off, with one even jammed on top of a park car’s aerial, alongside the unsettling note, quoting 'The Teddy Bears Picnic' song.

“If you go down to the woods today you’re sure of a big surprise,” the note read.

“If you go down to the woods today you had better go in disguise.”

Residents of Kapunda, which has a population of less than 3000, were left confused by the reckless act of vandalism and have offered to help Mr Boes repair the bears.

“They are a bit of an icon in Kapunda, people have come from all over the Barossa to see what they are up to,” Mr Boes told News Corp.

“They’ve been fishing at the duck pond. They have been climbing out of the North Kapunda pub running away from a ghost.”

Anyone with information regarding the vandalism is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000 or use the Crime Stoppers online reporting page.
