Police extend crackdown on motorists using phones

Frustrated police have extended an operation targeting South Australian drivers using mobile phones.

Operation Distraction saw 1400 motorists caught using their phone in the 30 days of June - an average of 46 a day.

Superintendent Bob Fauser said the result is a 70 per cent increase compared to a six month 'non-operation' period.

"I'm appalled that drivers just aren't getting the message," he said.

"I don't know of a driver that hasn't had a near miss because someone was using their phone while driving and almost hit them.

"Drivers choosing to ignore the clear and simple safety message are putting all other road users at risk.”

Most drivers caught were stung with a fine on $368, amounting to nearly $500,000 in revenue.
