Police crack down on drivers using mobile phones

Motorists are being urged to give their full attention to the road as police begin a crackdown on distracted drivers.

South Australia Police will conduct Operation Distraction through June, particularly focusing on drivers using mobile phones.

Superintendent Bob Fauser has asked drivers to examine and adjust their behaviour behind the wheel.

“Driving is a complex, coordinated task which demands care and attention,” he said.

“Activities such as dialling, texting or talking on the phone divert your attention from the road, putting your safety and the safety of other road users at risk.”

“You are your car’s best safety feature – hang up, look up and just drive.”

In 2013, more than 12,500 drivers and riders were fined for offences related to using a mobile phone.

Driving while using a phone carries a $300 fine, plus a $60 victims of crime levy and three demerit points.
