Ryan Gosling has dashed fans' hopes for a sequel to his hit comedy action film The Nice Guys.

Released in 2016, it sees the Barbie star team up with Gladiator's Russell Crowe as private eye Holland March and enforcer Jackson Healy who turn into unlikely partners when investigating the disappearance of a young woman named Amelia (Margaret Qualley).

It received widely positive reviews, with many lauding it as one of Ryan and Russell's best roles in their filmographies and others begging for a sequel.

With rumours abound over the years, Ryan has given a disappointing update for fans hoping a second film is on the cards.

The actor shared with Comic Book that a sequel to the film is unlikely following the reception of the first film and its competition with the Angry Birds movie adaptation.

"So much of a sequel, I think, is decided by the opening weekend of a movie, and we opened up against Angry Birds," he said. "So Angry Birds just destroyed us. Angry Birds got a sequel."

It comes as Ryan is set to star alongside Emily Blunt in another action comedy, The Fall Guy, due to be released on May 3.

Inspired by a TV show of the same name, Ryan plays stuntman Colt Seavers who finds himself back on set with his ex-girlfriend and director Jody as the lead role in her new film after the original actor, Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), goes missing.

With the production now in danger of shutting down, Colt endeavours to find Tom but instead finds himself in the middle of a criminal plot more dangerous than any of his stunts.

Directed by David Leitch, himself a former stuntman, Ryan spoke to Screen Rant about working alongside a stunt team in the film: "I was very happy to be the first actor to say I did none of my own stunts in this movie. I was very happy to leave it to the professionals. I've had a stunt double probably my whole life. And there's always this strange moment where they come in, they do all the cool stuff, they get none of the credit, they leave, and then we sort of pretend like I did it.

"It's just so fun and such an honor to be a part of something that shines light on them and shows them to be the real unsung heroes of the industry. Records were broken in this movie. David is obviously a former stunt guy, so he just surrounded us with the best of the best and the film really does become a love letter to the stunt community and their legacy."

The Fall Guy is released in UK cinemas on May 3.
