Rental crisis: Real estate agency changes ad after 'horrifying' detail noticed

It seems the rental market across the country has reached dire new levels, with people considering various bizarre properties.

While everyone's tastes are different when it comes to interior styling, the owners of one Aussie rental have been criticised for what's been described as a "horrifying" feature in one unusual studio listing.

The nation's housing affordability crisis shows no signs of slowing. In some cities it's even escalated, with footage frequently shared of the incredible queues for open homes as people desperately try to find a place to live. With so much demand for housing, some have started to call out what they see as rather undesirable conditions in certain rental properties — many of which can often be easily fixed.

'Furnished room with shower' slammed by renters

Such is the case with one property in Sydney's inner-city, with social media users taking aim at the Glebe rental for seemingly placing a portable shower in the combined bedroom and living space. Photos appear to show the shower plonked in the corner of the "furnished room" in the shared boarding house.

"Studio in Glebe," the listing says, initially advertising the space as a "furnished room with shower and kitchenette". However after being ridiculed online for the shower, the feature has since been omitted from the ad. "Sharing bathroom with others on the same floor," it now reads. "Perfect location. Garden in the back with BBQ area."

The agency responsible for the Sydney rental confirmed to Yahoo News Australia the item in question is in fact a shower, although it's understood not to be currently functioning.

While some may not mind having a broken shower in their bedroom, plenty online seem less than impressed by its addition.

"Pretty sure I've built this room on Sims at some point," one person joked. "Love how it’s just installed on a couple of bricks," said another.

"Remember when you used to be able to rent a liveable three bedroom house in a normal suburb for $380 per week," a third recalled.

"How on earth do they justify $380 for that?" a woman questioned. "There’s no toilet visible in any of the pics! It’s horrifying," another said.

Bizarre rental features become talking points

It's not the first time people have questioned what they've described as bizarre set-ups in homes, with one property in Narre Warren, in Melbourne's southeast generating controversy for having a full bathroom inside a bedroom in October. A property in Kirwan in Townsville was charging $480 per week for a home with a huge glass box — seemingly a shower — smack bang in the middle of a dining space in August.
