Jacob Michael Smith arrested over 'murder' of Norman Park woman Anthea Mari

The man wanted for questioning over the death of Brisbane woman Anthea Mari has been arrested.

Jacob Michael Smith, 38, was arrested at Gaven on the Gold Coast about 10:30am (AEST), but has not been charged.

Officers found Ms Mari's body after being called to reports of a serious assault at her home on Milsom Street in Norman Park on Tuesday.

Detective Inspector Rod Kemp said the case was now being treated as a murder investigation.

"The autopsy is continuing. We've received certain information in regards to that which leads us to believe it's a murder investigation," he said.

Detective Inspector Kemp said Mr Smith was at the Milsom Street property for an unknown amount of time on Monday.

"We believe he's just a friend," he said.

"He was known to the deceased, had been at the house on previous occasions and known to occupants of the house."

Ms Mari's body was found in the lounge room by officers called to the home about 4:00am on Tuesday.

The 34-year-old lived there with her two daughters, aged 11 and 12, as well as two male housemates.

She also had a 15-year-old daughter, who did not live at the house, as well as a four-year-old son.

Detective Inspector Kemp said no-one in the house heard anything before the woman's body was found.

"Our forensic police are still examining the scene ... [there is] no weapon at this time," he said.

"There has been nothing sound-wise at this stage - there was no noises of such or no extreme violence evident."

A post-mortem examination was due to be carried out today.

Family remember 'beautiful, loving mother'

Ms Mari's relatives said they have been left devastated by her death.

In a statement to ABC, her aunt Jane Mari said: "Anthea Mari was a beautiful woman and a loving mother.

"Her family are devastated and deeply grieving.

"No-one ever deserves to die like this."

Jane Mari said her niece had never told her that she felt unsafe in the house where she died.

She said Anthea had known Mr Smith for a long time, but they were not close friends.

The ABC understands Anthea Mari's daughters are being cared for by their grandmother and uncle on the Gold Coast.
