Family's heartbreak after boy, 2, mauled to death by pet dog

A family in regional Queensland is mourning the loss of their two-year-old son, who died days after being attacked by their dog.

Talan Peters was tragically mauled by the family dog on Saturday at their home in Mena Creek, sustaining severe injuries to his skull.

He was taken to Innisfail hospital before being airlifted to Townsville Base Hospital where he underwent emergency brain surgery and was placed in an induced coma but couldn’t be saved.

Family 'heartbroken' over tragedy

His parents said their final goodbyes on Monday night.

Talan leaves behind his parents Amber and James and brothers Lucas and Kade.

A GoFundMe page was started by Bex Newman, a relative of the family, to support the family while they grieve.

Almost $18,000 has been raised of the $20,000 goal so far.

"All funds of this page will be going directly to Talan’s family to help pay for his funeral and allow them time off work to grieve the loss of their child without the added financial stress of providing for their two beautiful boys Lucas (five) and Kaden (one month) at home," Ms Newman said.

"As you could imagine this is a truly heartbreaking time for the family."

Cassowary Coast Regional Council confirmed the dog “was destroyed by the owner after the tragedy occurred”, 7News reported.

Queensland Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
