Father, daughter catering team badly burned in Queensland festival explosion

A father and daughter have been severely burnt among five injured in an explosion at Sunnybank Hills in Queensland.

The father remains in a coma. Both he and his daughter will require extensive surgeries.

The father and daughter team were catering at a Taiwan Festival for families.

But inside their food truck was a leaking gas bottle and moments after the rear doors open it exploded

“I said to them, I said, ‘can you smell gas?’” festival vendor Robin Prokop said.

“Just like when you ignite fuel or like gas on a barbecue, it just sort of goes whooof.

“One person that was really badly burnt, he was like shocked, he just kind of stood there as people were pouring water over him. It was pretty bad.”

Festival organiser Stanley Hsu said they saw the blast.

“It was very, very quick,” he said.

“We saw the naked flames go up.”

Five people were hospitalised. Annie Chiang and her father the most severe.

Victims suffered injuries to their arms, heads and face. A 67-year-old father was placed in an induced coma.

His son was travelling in a separate car and arrived moments after the explosion.

Police say it is likely a burner in the truck ignited the gas. It was only metres from where the food truck was parked.

The incident is now being investigated by Workplace Health and Safety.
