Elderly driver smashes car through Gold Coast shop wall

An elderly driver has smashed a car through a brick wall at an IGA at Currumbin Waters on the Gold Coast.

It's believed the 81-year-old hit the accelerator instead of the brake, a police spokesperson said.

"We just heard a big bang and we come checked it out and, you know, you don't expect this every day. Car just right in the shop," co-owner Yaad Singh said.

The car's impact pushed fridges beside the counter to the area where customers usually wait to pay for their groceries.

The store's owners said it was very fortunate no one was there.

"Everybody was shell shocked when this happened," co-owner Harry Singh said.

"Inside was a very lucky escape for everybody. Normally there's lots of customers who are standing in front of those fridges."

"There's newspapers right at the spot where the car went through and the drinks fridges so people are always over there and queuing up for the checkouts."

When the car rammed through the shop's exterior the fridges were slammed forward and bottles and cans were sent flying.

A young girl and a man had been standing in front of the fridge just minutes earlier.

Another customer also passed through the checkout after them.

One of the store's co-owners thought the driver of the car had to climb into the back seat before getting out.

He said the man apologised for driving into the store.

The driver was taken to Gold Coast Hospital as a precaution.

The crash happened at about 8am on Sunday morning.
