Powerball jackpots to a record $100 million next week

Powerball will jackpot to a whopping $100 million next Thursday, for the first time in Australian lottery history.

The prize soared after Thursday’s division one $80 million Powerball failed to claim any winners, causing the game to jackpot for the eight week in a row.

Next Thursday, the $100 million pool will set the record for Australia’s biggest advertised jackpot prize ever.

However, it could set another record if the monster prize is won by a single person.

“It would be mind-blowing, but if one single entry takes home the entire $100 million jackpot next week it would be the largest Australian lottery jackpot ever won by a single entry,” The Lott spokesperson Matt Hart said.

“The current record is held by a couple of Hervey Bay grandparents who won $70 million in January 2016.

“Before their life-changing windfall the winners confessed to never having won anything more than a chook raffle.”

NSW Lotteries expects increased sales in the lead up to the record-setting draw.

“What we do know is that it will be a busy week in lottery outlets across the nation and we expect queues out the door,” Mr Hart said.

It’s anticipated that one in three Australian adults will have an entry in next week’s draw.

Customers are being urged to buy their Powerball tickets early to avoid the last-minute rush.

The numbers drawn in the Thursday August 9 Powerball draw 1161 were 5, 18, 10, 13, 34, 12 and 4, while the Powerball number was 19.

The $100 million Powerball draw 1160 will take place on Thursday August 16.
