Popular sauce recalled over fears bottle could explode

Australians are being warned about a lactic acid build-up that could cause the bottle of a popular brand of sauce to explode.

Sriracha Hot Chilli Sauce – available in 500ml and 830ml bottles from Coles, Woolworths, IGA’s Independents and Asian grocery stores across Australia – are being recalled over fears the bottles could bloat and explode, splattering spicy liquid onto a consumer.

The recall, which was issued by Kienfat Trading Pty Ltd, is for those bottles of sauce which are marked best before March 2021.

The recall announcement made through the NSW Food Authority warns people not to open bottles which feel ‘bloated’ and return the item to the place of purchase to receive a full refund.

The ‘bloating’ of the bottles is a direct result of the lactic acid build up, which also means the product continues to ferment.

Lactic acid is naturally in many foods and is formed by natural fermentation, according to lactic-acid.com.

Sometimes the acid is used as a pH regulator, or it can be used as a preservative and sometimes it is added as a flavouring agent.

The sauce was also recalled in the UK, with a Food Safety Authority of Ireland saying the sauce poses a risk of irritating eyes or skin, according to the Irish Mirror.
