Plane crashes into ocean

The desperate search for survivors is underway after a light plane crashed into the ocean off South Stradbroke Island in Queensland.

It is believed the aircraft is a Tiger Moth that was carrying two people including the pilot before it crashed at around 12:30pm (AEST).

Authorities are on the scene of the incident. The condition of both people is currently unknown.

"A police search and rescue operation is underway with the assistance of other agencies," police said in a media release.

Tiger Moth's website states there is no flight quite like a Tiger Moth flight over the Gold Coast.

"Experience the HIGHEST Thrill Ride on the Gold Coast for an ADRENALINE surge that is un-paralleled, join Tiger Moth Joy Rides for an experience like no other," it says.

"Choose from different scenic flights or add an exciting optional aerobatic flight, performing barrel rolls, loop the loops, and other exciting manoeuvres (8 out of 10 passengers choose this most exciting experience!).

"We operate every day of the year (weather permitting!) except for Christmas Day, and fly within a 60-mile radius of Gold Coast City."

More to come.
