A man has been charged with murder after the body of his 18-year-old girlfriend was found in the NSW town of Maitland.

Jordan Brodie Miller, 20, was arrested in the front yard of a home in Metford about 1.30am on Saturday.

Police then discovered the body of Emerald Wardle inside.

“Officers from Port Stephens-Hunter Police District were called to a home on Galway Crescent at Metford shortly before 1.30am (Saturday 20 June 2020), where they spoke to a 20-year-old man outside,” NSW Police said in a statement.

Nine News said Miller, who still lived with his parents, had been heard screaming by neighbours and would undergo mental health tests.

"(He) was out in the front yard and there was a short scuffle prior to him being arrested," Detective Inspector Ranald Urquhart told reporters.

One neighbour told the Daily Telegraph Miller was heard screaming out for help and “something about demons”.

Miller was refused bail to appear in Newcastle Local Court on Sunday.

Neighbours told the ABC, Ms Wardle was a “a lovely girl” and the area she lived in was “small, loving, quiet”.
