Oblivious swimmers hold baby unaware of danger lurking metres away

Oblivious beachgoers have been photographed holding a baby seemingly unaware a shark is swimming just metres from them.

Ginger Gilmer was on holiday at North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on Saturday when she noticed a group playing at the beach with a baby in tow.

Ms Gilmer shared pictures on Facebook, which she took from the 15th floor of her hotel.

The people playing in the water appear to be oblivious to a shark swimming just metres from them.

“Why I go to the beach to get in the pool,” she wrote.

“Sharks. Not one person had an idea of what was lurking around them. Can’t see the bottom, not swimming in it.”

She added “it’s the craziest thing” she’s ever seen.

Her photos have been shared more than 22,000 times with people horrified by the shark lurking near the beachgoers.

“My lord, that one man has that little kid in his arms. That’s creepy,” one woman wrote.

Another simply added, “no thank you”.

Despite the comments and concerns over the presence of sharks, the only shark attack which has occurred in the area within the last 12 months was at Myrtle Beach about 24km south.

North Myrtle Beach.com claims there hasn’t been a single fatal shark attack since 1852 with only 50 attacks recorded over the past century.

Last week, a 10-foot female great white was spotted off the coast of South Carolina at Charleston heading north.

Charleston is about 185km south of North Myrtle Beach.
