Parents facing jail after leaving child in car to go skiing

A couple have been charged after allegedly leaving their young child in the back of their car while they enjoyed a few ski runs on the slopes.

Katelynn Brent, 21, and Cory Ahern, 29, were both employees at Killington Resort where they were found skiing, according to a local police report.

The unattended child was reported by a passer-by, CBS News reports, but the couple were later pulled over by police in Vermont, US, while driving nearby with Ms Brent found to be intoxicated. The child was still in the car.

Woman fails breath test

Ms Brent was arrested after an officer suspected she was driving while drunk and a breath test showed she was over the limit.

In a statement from Killington Police Department, Ms Brent allegedly denied leaving the child alone in the car, but further investigation led to her admitting she had.

"They both ultimately admitted their involvement in leaving their child alone in their vehicle while skiing," it said.

But they reportedly checked on the child straight after each run.

The investigation showed the couple held a ski lift pass thanks to their employment at the resort and on February 8 when the incident occurred, and records show they'd accessed the ski lift 10 times.

Both parents have since been charged with cruelty to a child, and one is charged with driving under the influence, according to the statement.

The police findings were also shared with the Vermont Department of Children and Families and the New York State Department of Child Protective Services.

According to Vermont legislation, both parents could face up to two years in prison and a $500 (A$695) fine on the cruelty to a child charge, CBS News reports.
