Teacher, 28, killed in school car park where she worked

A high school teacher is being remembered for her "positive outlook and smiling face" after being killed in the car park of the school where she worked.

Ciara McKeon, 28, was a tennis coach and physical education teacher at Anclote High School in Florida in the US and died following an alleged hit and run on Thursday. She was struck by an SUV.

The school community, including coworkers and students, along with Ms McKeon's friends and family, planted a memorial garden on the school grounds in her honour.

Following the incident, the school principal Vanessa Moon, sent a message to shocked families and offered grief counselling to those in need.

"Let’s remember her positive outlook and her smiling face, and appreciate the huge impact she has had on our students — and on all of us," the message read.

"She was an integral part of our school community and will never be forgotten.”

Following her death, the school's basketball team shared a heartfelt tribute on Twitter after being left "heartbroken" by the news.

"It is with a very heavy heart that we announce the passing of Coach McKeon. We are heartbroken but grateful for the impact that she had on all of our lives. Please keep the McKeon family and Anclote community in your thoughts and prayers," it said.

An investigation is underway

The incident occurred just before 7am on Thursday (local time) and the driver, a 24-year-old man, has not been identified, Miami Herald reports.

He reportedly did not see Ms McKeon before knocking her down. The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating.

Ms McKeon was initially trapped under the car before being freed and taken to hospital in acritical condition.
