P-plater caught in dangerous stunt with motorbike rider: 'Idiotic'

The video of the young drivers filmed on a Brisbane highway has been described as 'utterly stupid'.

A group of young men have been caught in a wildly dangerous stunt while driving down a highway in Brisbane, with the entire act captured on a motorcyclist's body camera and uploaded online.

The footage shows the motorbike rider in the left lane with open road ahead of him when a black Mazda flies past with passengers hanging out of the vehicle on either side.

The driver's red P-plate can be seen flapping in the wind at the rear of the vehicle as a young man in the passenger side hangs his foot centimetres from the road, mimicking the actions of a riding a push-powered scooter.

The dangerous stunt with the man hanging out the widow attempting to high 5 the motorbike rider was caught on camera.

The men smile and wave at the motorcyclist as they pass him, before clambering back inside the car.

The motorbike rider then speeds up and the men re-emerge from the car, before one precariously leans over and high fives the motorcyclist as the others in the car erupt with delighted cheers.

The video was uploaded online with the caption: "Average day in Australia".

Dangerous behaviour slammed online: 'Stupid'

Unsurprisingly the video generated strong reactions online with many shocked at the "idiotic behaviour" exhibited by both the car passengers and the motorcyclist.

"I know someone who died doing the exact same thing... it's not cool or funny, it's bloody dangerous," one user wrote on Reddit, while another branded the behaviour "utterly stupid".

The Queensland government strongly advises against passengers travelling with any part of their body outside a window or door of the vehicle.

"You must not get off, or out of, a moving motor vehicle," the state government's website reads under the common road rules section.

"The only time part of your body may protrude outside the vehicle is when you are driving and using a hand signal to show you are about to stop, slow down or about to turn, move right or make a U-turn."

Other than indicating an upcoming manoeuvre to fellow motorists, there is "no reason" for drivers or passengers to have their body outside of a moving vehicle — with hefty fines applying if individuals simply wave their friends goodbye out of the window.

“Drivers and passengers need to apply common sense, it’s not only illegal but downright dangerous,” NRMA Road Safety Expert Dimitra Vlahomitros told Yahoo News Australia in 2019.
