'Because I can': Prisoner livestreams from 'deadset joke' Parklea jail

Shocking video has emerged from one of Sydney’s maximum security jails showing a prisoner flaunting a knife, a ‘slasher’ razor blade and drugs.

Even more astonishing, the inmate claims he filmed it on a phone supplied by guards.

The extraordinary video comes from inside what is supposed to be one of New South Wales’ most secure jails.

“On a day to day basis this place is a deadset joke,” the criminal says.

“Right now I’m in my cell and I’ve got a mobile phone.”

It is a prison blockbuster complete with corruption, weapons and violence, and a guest appearance from a cell mate,

“Why have I got a mobile phone is because screws are bringing them into the jail for money,” he says.

“Why am I carry a knife around like that why does that need to be in my hand at this point in time?

“See all that? That’s the drug ice. Why have I got it? Because I can.”

The man demonstrates the effectiveness of the blade on himself saying it is an example of “what it can do to your throat”.

There’s a smorgasbord of contraband and it is all a major embarrassment for jails boss Peter Sevrin.

The commissioner was not talking on Sunday but he has ordered an investigation and staged raids inside Parklea to try to manage the fallout.

But they are too little, too late.

The system has never had a mobile phone broadcasting live from inside.
