Crooks steal Sydney man's cash and laptop while his Ferrari goes up in flames

A Sydney man had three bouts of bad luck in a matter of moments Saturday.

First his Ferrari burst into flames, then someone ripped off his cash and bank card while another crook took the laptop from the flames of his burning vehicle.

The man was out for a Saturday morning drive in Lalor Park when he stopped to grab some cash from an ATM.

Seconds later his luxury sports car's engine burst into flames.

The 46-year-old had only bought the $100,000 car three months ago.

A witness told 7 News a liquid from the engine leaked, accelerating the fire.

"When we were putting the fire out, I noticed that there was oil or something leaking out of the car which that is what engulfed the car," Marcel Francotte said.

Bystander Darren Guppy said witnesses "could feel the heat from 20, 30 metres back, once it started raging we just ducked behind cars".

Some Good Samaritans tried to help but others took advantage of the situation with Mr Francotte spotting one person seizing the driver's laptop from the car.

"When I realise one of the gentlemen who was helping me put the fire out started stealing things out of the car, I just thought it wasn't right," Mr Francotte said.

Another opportunist moved in, nicking the cash and bankcard the owner left in the ATM during the consternation.

NSW Police Inspector Peter Jenkins said it was an "extremely low act to take someone's property at any stage" but this was "unfathomable".

One of the crooks fled the scene in a car, hindering the efforts of firefighters in their haste to escape.
