Parramatta is the booming economic heart of western Sydney.

It's a thriving commercial hub that draws thousands of workers and shoppers from across the city.

But as more people move in - it isn't just the population rising.

According to crime statistics, you're more likely to be a burglary victim in Parramatta than almost anywhere else in Sydney.

The most likely spot for residents to be burgled in Sydney is CLAYMORE in the Western Suburbs.

Just to the north, the PARRAMATTA area makes a surprise appearance in second place.

ST MARY'S came in third and neighbouring MOUNT DRUITT fourth, while the only inner city entry on the list is REDFERN - which rounds out the top five.

The least likely place in greater Sydney to be burgled is GLENBROOK in the lower Blue Mountains.

Across in Sydney's south, OYSTER BAY ranks second best, while up on the northern beaches, COLLAROY comes in third.

Also in the south, GYMEA ranks fourth while the nearby BONNET BAY is the fifth safest.

Luke and Sharon Roumanos moved to Parramatta 11 years ago and had never had any trouble. Now they've been burgled six times in the past 18 months.

"I had two in one week actually about six to 12 months ago," Luke told 7News.

"It's pretty scary when you come home and find your place has been broken into, you don't know if they're inside.

"I'm glad my wife wasn't home at the time.

"Although you do move on and get over it, you are on edge all the time."

And it doesn't just impact the victims. Insurers also use the figures to calculate your premiums.

"There are certain suburbs where the burglary rate is quite high and you can offset that risk by installing some security measure that help you reduce the cost in that insurance," insurance broker Andrew Perros told 7News.

Security experts recommend window locks, deadlocks and security systems - but say by the time people act, it's usually too late.

"When they do get broken into - then they add all of the security measures," said Nathan Clayton from Steady State Solutions.
