Murder mystery after elderly woman's body found

There's a mystery in Western Sydney over the death of an elderly woman who police fear may have been murdered.

Police have sealed off and searched the area around her Toongabbie home all day, telling neighbours not to talk.

The alarm was raised by a friend around 10am on Thursday when she saw the 75-year-old's body lying inside the house as she arrived to pick her up to take her to an event.

She knocked on the door - then saw the victim through a window.

The quiet cul-de-sac was soon brought into lockdown as police descended on the Toongabbie home following the horrific discovery.

Sources have told 7News Sydney she was discovered with blood on her face.

"As a result of initial inquiries, the death is being treated as suspicious," said Inspector Rob Toynton.

"At this stage the next of kin has not been notified and this investigation is in its infancy."

Shocked neighbours say she'd lived here for thirty years.

"It's a bit distressing - you'd never expect anything like this in the neighbourhood," a local resident told 7News Sydney.

Police have set up a strike force to investigate, including detectives from the Homicide squad

They've called in every resource at their disposal as they search for a possible killer.

Five forensic teams were brought in to collect evidence around the home, including a black hoodie.

The public order and riot squad carried out a search in a reserve behind Paris Place.

"Anybody who saw anything suspicious in the last 24 hours on Station Street, Mimosa Road and Paris Lane in Toongabbie, we would want to hear from you," said Inspector Toynton.
