A witness who spoke to 7News said she showed the video to police, who told her there was nothing they could do if they had no idea who the woman is.

The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, said the person being vilified were shaken.

"I had to get her to calm down. She was looking for an emergency button in the train," she said.

"I thought about the child the whole day, thinking 'I hope the child is in safe hands.'"

Anyone with information about the incident or the identity of the woman involved is being urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800333000.
