Newlywed couple revealed as victims in footpath sinkhole

A newlywed couple has been revealed as victims of a huge sinkhole that opened up in a city footpath.

The man and woman, both aged 23, were married just four days before the accident according to the South China Morning Post.

The couple bought wedding candies for their friends in their home city of Chengdu and were walking to the bus station when they fell into the sinkhole, according to outlet Shanghaiist.

The freak accident occurred when a seven metre wide sink hole suddenly opened up in a busy commercial district of Dazhou city, south western China on Sunday October 7.

Five people were swallowed by the hole at about 2.30pm local time, with one young man immediately rescued.

Rescuers recovered the remains of the woman just after midnight on the Monday and she was declared dead at hospital.

Her husband was found at 9.36am that morning and was declared dead at the scene, according to local outlet Shanghaiist.

All four victims of the sinkhole have been found, as the bodies of the other two victims, a 45-year-old father and 11-year-old son, were located on Tuesday afternoon according to CNN.
