New Year's opening hours: Woolworths, Coles, Aldi, Kmart, Bunnings and more
As December nears an end, Aussies are dusting off their 2022 calendars and getting ready to ring in the new year.
With parties, barbecues, family gatherings, shopping trips and get-togethers on the cards to celebrate the new year, food, alcohol, and variety items are high on Aussies’ shopping lists.
Throughout the country, many supermarkets and retail stores are getting ready to close their doors for New Year's Day or limit their trading hours to suit.
Yahoo News Australia has compiled a guide for large-scale variety stores, liquor outlets and supermarket chains by state, to help you organise your New Year’s celebrations.
Coles
NSW/ACT:
All Coles stores across the state will be open on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, with the exception of Smithfield in Sydney’s west, which will close on New Year’s Day.
All Coles stores across the ACT will be open on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.
VIC:
All Coles stores across the state will be open on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.
QLD:
All stores will be open until 9pm New Year’s Eve, with selected stores open until 10pm.
All stores will be open 9am-6pm on New Year’s Day, with the exception of Mt Isa and Goondiwindi which will be closed. Selected stores will be open 7am-9pm.
SA:
All Adelaide metro stores will be open until 9pm New Year’s Eve, with Adelaide metro stores open from 11am-5pm.
Regional stores (including Whyalla, Victor Harbour, Port Pirie, Port Lincoln, Port Augusta, Murray Bridge Green, Mount Gambier, Mount Barker and Berri) may have varied trading hours on New Year’s Eve, but will be open 8am-8pm New Year’s Day.
TAS:
All stores across the state will be open until 10pm New Year’s Eve, excluding Bridgewater which will be open until 9am.
On New Year’s Day, all stores will be open from 8am, except for Sorell which will be open from 9am, and Devonport, Launceston and Meadow Mews which will open at 7am.
NT:
All Alice Springs Coles stores will open from 6am-10pm New Year’s Eve, and open from 8am-8pm New Year’s Day.
All Darwin stores will be open until 10pm New Year’s Eve, and trading from 8am-8pm on New Year’s Day.
Stores in the Port Hedland area (including Chinatown, Karratha, and Kununurra) will be open until 9pm on New Year’s Eve, and trading through New Year’s Day.
South Hedland, and Tom Price will be open until 8pm on New Year’s Day, with Tom Price closing on New Year’s Day.
WA:
All Perth metro stores will be trading from 8am-9pm on New Year’s Eve, and 8am-6pm on New Year’s Day.
Trading hours may vary at the following regional stores: Albany, Australind, Bunbury, Bunbury South, Busselton, Busselton Central, Collie, Dunsborough, Eaton Fair, Erskine, Geraldton, Halls Head, Kalgoorlie, Lakelands, Mandurah Forum, Manjimup, Margaret River, Meadow Springs, Narrogin, Northam, Orana, Pinjarra, and Vasse.

Woolworths
NSW/ACT:
All Woolworths stores will be open on New Year’s Eve, and most Woolworths and Woolworths Metro stores will be open on New Year’s Day.
All ACT stores will be open on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day. Most Metro stores will also be open on New Year’s Day.
Victoria:
All Victorian stores will be open on New Year’s Eve. All Victorian Woolworths stores will be open on New Year’s Day, with most Metro stores trading on January 1.
Queensland:
All Queensland stores will be open on New Year’s Eve.
On New Year’s Day, most Woolworths and Woolworths Metro stores will be open, excluding Ayr, Blackwater, Bowen, Charters Towers, Childers, Chinchilla, Kingaroy, Mission Beach, Mt Isa, Pittsworth, Proserpine, Roma and Weipa which will close on January 1.
SA:
All South Australian stores will be open on New Year’s Eve.
Most stores will be open on New Year’s Day, except for Millicent, southeast of Adelaide, which will be closed.
TAS:
All stores will be open on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.
NT:
All stores will trade on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.
WA:
All Western Australian stores will be open on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

Aldi
NSW/ACT:
All NSW and ACT stores will be open from 8.30am on New Year’s Eve, and from 10 am from New Year’s Day.

All stores will open from 8.30am on New Year’s Eve and from 10am on New Year’s Day, except for Mildura, which will open from 9am on New Year’s Day.

Queensland:
Queensland Aldi’s will be open New Year’s Eve from 8.30am, except for Carrara which is closed. Carrara will reopen on New Year’s Day from 10am–6pm.
All stores will be open New Year’s Day from 10am, except for Kingaroy which will be closed. Kingaroy is open from 8.30am-7pm on New Year’s Eve so customers can stock up in advance.

Berry, Kadina, Mount Gambier, Mount Barker, Murray Bridge, Nuriootpa, Port Pirie, Victor Harbour, and Whyalla will open from 9am on New Year’s Day, with all other stores opening at 11am.

Kmart
NSW/ACT:
All stores will be open on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, except for Cowra which is closed for both days.
Figtree, Sylvania, Casula, Blacktown, Penrith and Mt Druitt will be closing at 10pm on New Year’s Eve, and reopening for 24 hour trade at 8am on New Year’s Eve.
ACT stores will be open from 8am on both New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.
VIC:
All Victorian stores will be open both New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.
Burwood, Narre Warren, Belmont, and Campbelfield will close at 10pm on New Year’s Eve, and reopen at 8am New Year’s Day for 24 hour trade.
QLD:
All stores will be open on New Year’s Eve.
On New Year’s Day, most stores will be open, but Ayr, Charters Towers, Bowen, Roma, Goondiwindi, Chinchilla and Mt Isa are closed.
SA:
All stores will be open from 8am on New Year’s Eve, except for Berri and Port Augusta which will open from 9am.
On New Year’s Day, most stores will open from 9am. Katherine will open at 10am on New Year’s Day.
Firle, Tea Tree, Munno Para, Ingle Farm, Kurralta Park, West Lakes, Port Noarlunga, Port Adelaide, Marion, Rundle Mall and Churchill will open from 11am on New Year’s Day.
TAS:
All stores will be open on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.
Newtown and Launceston will close at 8pm on New Year’s Eve, and reopen at 8am on New Year’s Day for 24 hour trade.
NT:
All Northern Territory stores will be open from 8am to 7pm on New Year’s Eve.
Stores will open at 9am on New Year’s Day, except for Katherine which will open at 10am.
WA:
All stores will be open from 8am on New Year’s Eve, except for Eaton Fair which will open from 7am.
Esperance will be open from 8am-6pm on New Year’s Eve, but will be closed on New Year’s Day and January 2.
On New Year’s Day, most stores will open from 8am. Albany will open from 10am on New Year’s Day, and Geraldton will open at 11am.

All stores are open except for Big W Kingaroy which will be closed.
TAS:

All stores will be open over New Year’s Day.
WA:
All Western Australian stores will be open on New Year’s Day.

All Target stores in Australia will be open on New Year’s Eve.
On New Year’s Day, all stores will be open, except for a few key stores in New South Wales which will be closed.
Shell Harbour, Warrawong and Wollongong will be closed on New Year’s Day, but will reopen at 9am on January 2.

NSW/ACT:
On New Year’s Eve, Westfield Sydney and Sydney Central Plaza will trade from 9.30am-5.30pm.
Westfield Bondi Junction, Burwood, Chatswood, Hurstville, Miranda and Parramatta Westfields will trade from 9.30am-6pm on New Year’s Eve.
Westfield Eastgardens, Hornsby, Liverpool, Mt Druitt, Penrith, Warringah, Kotara and Tuggerah will trade from 9am-5.30pm on New Year’s Eve.
All ACT Westfields will also trade from 9am-5.30pm on New Year’s Eve.
All centres will be closed on New Year’s Day.
VIC:
On New Year’s Eve, all Victorian Westfield Centres will trade from 9am-5.30pm.
On New Year’s Day, all centres will trade from 10am-5pm.
QLD:
On New Year’s Eve, all Westfields in Queensland will trade from 9am-5.30pm.
On New Year’s Day, Westfield Coomera and Helensvale will trade from 10am-4pm.
Westfield North Lakes, Garden City, Carindale and Chermside will trade from 10am-5pm on New Year’s Day.
SA:
On New Year’s Eve, all centres will trade from 9am-5.30pm.
On New Year’s Day, all centres will trade from 11am-5pm.
WA:
All centres will trade from 9am-5.30pm on New Year’s Eve.
On New Year’s Day, Western Australian Westfields will trade from 11am-5pm.
