Why this new Aldi bread is impressing nutritionists
A $5 low-carbohydrate Aldi loaf is proving you can have your bread and eat it too, described as a “game changer” for diabetics and others looking to reduce their carb intake.
The Baker’s Life 85 per cent Lower Carb bread is said to have retained the deliciousness of bread, while also gaining a thumbs up from nutritionists.
The product offers a heavily reduced carbohydrate load but with all the wholegrain and fibre benefits found in a dense-grain bread.
The high protein and fibre content makes it a hit for diabetics or anyone watching their weight, including those who follow a “keto” diet comprising low-carb foods and avoiding carbohydrate-rich staples like bread and pasta.
The reduced carb content – by blending wheat, soy and lupin proteins which gives the “mouthfeel of bread” – allows those who still want to enjoy a few slices of bread each day the ability to do just that, without compromising on taste or nutritional value, Sydney nutritionist Susie Burrell told News Corp.
While it is higher in fat than most other varieties of bread, it is polyunsaturated fat derived from wholegrains and seeds like linseeds and sunflower seeds, linked to a number of health benefits, the nutritionist said.
“It is much lower in refined flour than regular bread is that it is exceptionally filling, and with a very low GI is likely to keep you full for several hours after eating it,” Ms Burrell said.
Shoppers have also backed the low-carb loaf, with one convert calling it an “Instant game changer!” on Reddit.

“Don’t have anything bad to say about it, it was bloody good bread and enabled me to eat my first cheese and Vegemite sandwich in 2 years. What a time to be alive. :D”
Another agreed: “It tastes pretty damn good. I think it tastes 99% like normal bread.”
One woman wrote on Facebook that the bread was “seriously amazing and a game changer for people with diabetes”.
The product was trialled at select stores last year, however Aldi confirmed in an online statement the product has been recently added to the supermarket’s “everyday range” and should be available in all stores across Australia.
