'My life’s gone': Teen launches petition to overturn meat pie ban after losing bet

Who ate all the pies? Not this bloke!

A Canberra teenager is “gutted” he’s no longer able to enjoy the satisfying taste of a hot meat pie after losing a bet on Saturday.

Ryan Kennedy, who plays for the Tuggeranong Valley Cricket Club, bet his teammates he’d score a 50 in yesterday’s match – a wager he said resulted in the “most severe consequences”.

Before the ban, the 14-year-old from Calwell said he ate meat pies two to three times a week.

If he won the bet, three of his mates would have had to buy him two pies each. But he lost and so he was banned from enjoying the iconic Aussie tradition forever.

The young cricket player confessed he had been playing the sport for six years and “never made a 50 before, so I don’t know why I did it”.

“It was a fun thing to do that ended up badly,” he told 7 News Online.

“My life’s gone. My greatest love. I’m absolutely gutted.”

The young man said his mates have been teasing him by sending pictures of their own meat pies.

“It’s been a sad time not being able to eat them, especially when they’re sitting in the freezer.”

He’s a big fan of deliciousness of Four ‘N Twenty, Sergents Pies, and even the locally made delicacies picked up at bakeries along the east coast – he loves them all.

But Ryan has been given a lifeline – a second chance to enjoy the mouthwatering taste of beef on shortcrust once more, if 250 people sign his online petition at Change.org.

“Words can't explain how disappointed I am with myself for doing it,” he wrote on the petition.

“This was when I made a bet that put my greatest love in life at risk. I made a bet with the most severe consequences if I lost, which I went on to do.”

He said if he reached 250 he will be “given a second chance at life and be allowed to eat meat pies again”.

The petition has already received 58 supporters, so Ryan is about 190 signatures away from devouring the iconic Aussie snack once again.

One supporter said: “Ryan is one of the sickest lads around, and the fact that he won't be able to eat meat pies again scares me to no end. I don't want to know a man who can only eat apple and raspberry pies, not being able to get a nice warm meat pie from a servo on the road.”

Another wrote: “It hurts to see Ryno without the love of his life”.

“I cannot stand to see a growing boy cry!” a third supporter agreed.

“How could a man be deprived from MEAT PIES?! It was unthinkable and I literally began to sweat after reading,” commented another.

Asked how he would celebrate making it to 250 signatures, Ryan said: “I hope one of my mates will buy me a couple.”

The teen said this was the most significant bet he’s made since losing a wager in 2014 where he bet the Sydney Swans would win the AFL Grand Final. They were defeated by the Hawks, so Ryan was forced to mow his mate’s mum’s lawn for free, rather than doubling his earnings for the job.
