Moment python constricts bat in Queensland family's backyard

WARNING – DISTURBING CONTENT: This is the moment a python is found constricting a bat in Queensland backyard after a woman’s young children made the predatory discovery.

A Bundaberg mother said her children found the snake preparing to make a meal out of a bat in their backyard, so she grabbed her mobile phone to record the incredible act.

While the Apple Tree Creek woman admitted she was “not a fan of snakes”, she couldn’t help watch as the python devoured its prey in her backyard.

Bonnie Chaplin shared a series of videos to Facebook on Wednesday over four hours, as she and her young children watched the python prepare, then swallow its meal.

She described the scene as: “not something you really want to wake up to first thing in the morning”.

“I hate snakes. I really do!” she can be heard saying while filming the bat desperately fighting to free itself as the python constricted tighter around it.

The woman said she couldn’t fathom the 2.5 metre snake being able to fit the bat in its stomach, and is amazed when she returns later to find it has gobbled the creature up.

In the woman’s final video in the series, the full-bellied python can be seen slithering away through a large gap in the fence.

Ms Chaplin said she didn’t bother to call a snake catcher to relocate the serpent as she was in the process of moving house and wasn’t too concerned.

“It can stay here and meet the new residents when they move in,” she chuckled.
