The miraculous surgery that gave a koala her sight back

A blinded koala has undergone eye surgery after she was discovered wandering around aimlessly in circles.

The old marsupial, named Seaham Kerry, was found in a horse paddock with bad ulcerations in her eyes.

The koala was taken in before a veterinary surgeon managed to remove some of her scarring and ulceration. They then sutured the koala’s eyes closed while her corneas healed.

The surgeon believes her eye problems may have been caused by an unknown long-term irritant.

Seaham Kerry is now recuperating at the Port Stephens Koalas sanctuary in NSW.

Adorable footage from the sanctuary on May 7 shows the koala being fed medicine while wearing an Elizabethan collar.

A serum made from her blood plasma will be applied to her eyes for two weeks to assist healing with the surgeon confident Seaham Kerry’s vision will return.
